RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships – best defined as a specific connection between objects, entities or people. Perhaps the most common and prevalent form of relationship (apart from the mathematical ones) are the relationships between people.

It is very important for people to understand relationships in order to exist in a society. Come to think of it, relationships form the central core of our existence. Be it a friend, your dog, your mother or your uncle, u are related to the things as well as people around you in more ways than one. As someone rightly said “Treasure your relationships and not your possessions”

Kinds of Relationships:

If you break it down, there are basically three kinds of relationships:

Dependent Relationships: People engaged in dependent relationships spend much of their time arguing about who needs to take care of whom.
Independent Relationships: People in an independent relationships are often lonely and try avoiding contact with anything or anyone at any given point of time.
Inter dependent relationships: These are relationships where in people do what is best for all parties involved in the relationship, which often include themselves. Reasonable agreements are made and wise decisions taken. In short everyone is happy.

Going by what is said above, the ideal relationship that everyone would want to indulge in would be an inter dependent relationship. But then why is that we don’t always follow the norms of such a relationship when we know that this is what we want? We remain happy or atleast satisfied in these three relationships. Undoubtedly the highest level of security arises in an inter dependent relationship, which explains why we build relationships in the first place.

Why do we build relationships?

The main reason behind which we build any kind of relationship or friendship is because we have an underlying feeling in us that we need someone to take care of us. We think that we cannot take care of ourselves. Right from the time we are born, there are different people who managed our needs, be it materialistic, financial, emotional, mental or physical. We are always taken care of. Security – that’s the key word in any kind of relationship.

Perhaps the best kind of relationship to explore would be the relationship between a man and a woman – Right from the courting or the so called friendship stage up until marriage.

Most people feel that articles on relationships don’t work and are useless because their partners will never change. Little do they realize that the change that they are looking for most often needs to come from themselves? So how does one build a good relationship? How do we remain happy in a relationship that we intend on sticking to? What does it take to make a relationship last?
